Visitor numbers up to a record 19.5 million people in 2006 - 2007

19.5 million people visited Florida’s diverse state park system. in the year 2006-2007 according to figures released today. The number are at a record high up 7.6% on the previous year! This record number of visitors boosted the economy by $900 million. This vast sum of money generated by the system shows that the average visitor can create a positive effect on the local and statewide economy. The states system is one of the largest in the nation with over 160 parks encompassing over 700,000 acres!

The top park visited was Honeymoon Island north of Tampa off the coast of Dunedin, with over 975,000 visitors with St Andrews State Park in Panama City coming in a close second at 890,000, however John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, comes in third at 860,000.

Having been to Honeymoon Island many times I can say that it really is the most beautiful! Long white sandy beaches and great facilities all swamped by the warm Gulf of Mexico…great fishing, swimming and nature center!
